Welcome

The Tartan

Tartan is a patterned cloth consisting of crisscrossed, horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colors.  Tartans originated in woven wool, but now they are made in many other materials. Scottish tartans usually represent a clan whilst Irish tartans usually represent the county or region where a clan originated.

The General Grand Chapter Tartan is a tartan for all Royal Arch Masons.  The colors are symbolic of Royal Arch Masonry in the United States: dark red represents the General Grand Chapter; red represents the constituent chapters and members; the four Golden bands represent the 4 degrees in the American York Rite and the Blue, Purple, Red and White colors in the multi-colored bands together represent the banners found in the Royal Arch Chapter.

The Crest Badge

A Scottish Crest Badge is a heraldic badge worn to show allegiance to an individual or membership in a specific Scottish clan.  Crest badges consist of a crest and a motto/slogan. These elements are heraldic property and protected by law in Scotland.

The General Grand Chapter Crest Badge has the Triple-Tau, Triangle and Circle as its heraldic elements.  The strap and buckle circlet represent loyalty to the Royal Craft and the  motto, “SANCTITAS DOMINO” translated is “Holiness to the Lord”.

Official Registry

Our tartan was registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans, which holds the records of all known tartans in the world.  The details are available at: https://tartanregister.gov.uk/tartanDetails?ref=13307
